One of the most exciting areas in recent years has been the field of Advanced Therapy. Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) offer the potential to treat a wide range of human illnesses and injuries by using cells and tissues to repair or replace damaged or diseases tissue.
Advanced Therapy manufacturing involved the production of ATMPs. These products are made using living cells, tissues, or genes that have been modified to create a therapeutic effect. ATMPs are classified into three categories: Gene Therapy medicinal products, Somatic Cell Therapy medicinal products, and Tissue-engineered products.
Gene therapy medicinal products involve the use of genes to treat or prevent disease. Somatic cell therapy medicinal products use cells from the patient or a donor to treat disease. Tissue-engineered products involve the use of living cells to create a functional tissue or organ.
The development of ATMPs requires a multidisciplinary approach, involving experts in cell biology, biotechnology, and clinical medicine. The process of manufacturing ATMPs is complex, involving the isolation and culture of cells, gene modification, and quality control.
